The Indifference

The other party to the oldest open contract in the record. It wears your face when it comes to visit.

Overview

Two names, two witnesses, ten thousand years apart. A boy aboard the Zariman called it the Man in the Wall, because for him that is exactly what it was. The scholars of the Sanctum Anatomica called it the Indifference, because that is what it taught them. The archive keeps both names and trusts neither to be the whole of it.

What is attested is a method. It arrives as a copy of whoever it visits: your face, your voice, a smile held one degree too long. It greets its guests with the names only their families used. And across its marked manifestations, one identifier is constant: the right index finger is missing. Where that finger went is among the few questions in this entry with a clean answer.

Whether it lives in the Void or is the Void, wearing a face for our convenience, the record cannot close. The gap is held honestly, and it is held under watch.

The War Within

The record holds one candidate contact before the naming: a distorted voice in the mountain, during the Kuva ceremony, weighing in on what the Operator chose to do with the Elder Queen's Kuva. The attribution is retroactive, and the archive enters it as such.

The first mind to name it belonged to a child. Rell of the Zariman was different from the other children: where they learned to look away from the thing in the walls, he could not, and so he never did. The Lotus filed his warnings under Void-exposure delusion. The record notes, without satisfaction, that every later chapter proves the child right and the guide wrong.

Rell spent his humanity on the problem. He gave up his body entirely, committing himself into his frame without rest or return, and the Red Veil grew up around the chained warframe the way a faith grows around a martyr who has not finished dying. For centuries his unbroken vigil held closed the door the rest of the system pretends does not exist.

The Operator freed him. It was mercy, and even the freed received it as mercy. But a vigil ended is a duty inherited, and Palladino named the heirs plainly: all of them. Since that hour the apparitions have walked the Tenno's own ships, wearing the Tenno's own face, offering the greeting a parent would. Kiddo.

The Handshake

The New War

After the Sacrifice it began keeping appointments. It asked the Operator, gently, whether they were quite sure they remembered a killing the way it happened: the first evidence that it can reach into memory, or wants to be believed able to. It wore the Lotus's helmet and led the Operator back to the Reservoirs of Lua, laughing. It sat atop a Railjack's Reliquary Drive, above the mummified finger sealed inside, and observed that the Tenno had taken long enough.

The New War finally entered the founding transaction into the record. The Zariman, mid-catastrophe, the adults gone or worse, and a voice offering a child terms: it could save them, all of them, but the child had to want it. A handshake closed the deal. The children of the Ten Zero did not merely survive the Void. They were saved by it, on terms, and the party of the second part has never once suggested the contract is concluded.

Its true shape was witnessed the same war, once. A pale, eyeless figure of too many limbs, set into an ornate white wall; above it, the Operator's own double, seated, wearing the Lotus's helm; on the lower right hand, the index finger missing. It spoke in a tongue the record cannot translate and declines to guess at. Then the wall was only a wall.

The oldest attested contact surfaced last. Albrecht Entrati, the Orokin scholar who opened the first door into the Void, fell through it holding nothing but a Seriglass bell. Something met him there, in an inverted not-place furnished like his own laboratory: himself, or a thing content with the resemblance. It greeted him as Little Bengel. Only his mother had ever called him that.

He ran. The portal was sealed behind him on a pursuing hand, and the severed fingers became the quiet foundation of the Orokin Void age: reliquary drives, Void-capable hulls, in time the Zariman program itself. The drives that bore the fleet across the empty sea were seeded from those fingers: fragments of the entity, sealed and humming. Aboard the recovered Zariman its keepers still count those relics, and are honest about the arithmetic: fewer than there used to be.

Albrecht refused Continuity ever after. His reasoning is preserved: he could not be certain that what walked out of the Void that day was him, and immortality is a poor gift to give a stranger. He told no one. Ten thousand years of Void travel proceeded on infrastructure built from a secret.

His successors, the Cavia, met the presence in the walls of his own Sanctum and named it at last: the Indifference, whose heralds are the Murmur. It mocked. It bargained. It demanded a page of the Grimoire as part of "our deal." And it was repelled, not by armament, but by loyalty spent freely on its intended victim. The nearest thing to a mission statement the record holds comes in the quest's epilogue, as a rhyme: a deal, shook; a little handshake, all it took. The closing line does not arrive alone. A black-eyed figure wearing Albrecht's face joins in to deliver it: we end as we began.

The Poison to the Plan

By the present era, patience had become pursuit. The warning came from the Lotus, of all voices: something was calling to her, and she was singing to drown it out. The quarry was Albrecht himself, hunted across time toward the one year the work of his later life had prepared.

In Höllvania, in the sealed year 1999, it stopped whispering. It raised a dead soldier, Major Neci Rusalka, and wore the corpse as a vessel. It borrowed the faces of Albrecht's own people to mock him. And it told the Drifter the clause the record had missed for years: the handshake saved the children because the Operator wanted it. It never said it would save the Drifter. The Orokin it dismissed as butchers, flaying flesh for stolen stars: what it gives, it gives freely, and what was taken from it, it has not forgotten.

Albrecht named its weakness to its face: love. The poison to the plan. The record concurs with the evidence, whatever the plan may be. Loyalty repelled it in the Sanctum. The bonds between the Drifter and six strangers of the Hex now power the closed loop that locks it out of 1999 permanently. It offers to be father, lover, friend, every bond at once, which is to say a substitute for all of them, and it is defeated, each attested time, by the ones that cannot be substituted.

Duviri keeps its own file. A vagabond seen wandering near the mood-spirals, laughing, right index finger missing: the identification is implied, and the archive enters it as implied. What came later needed no inference. Wearing Rusalka still, it took Thrax's throne and drove the guardian Oraxia mad, and was confined at cost to the Apocrypha, Duviri's realm of untold stories. Confinement is attested. Permanence is not.

What does it want? The archive holds the question open, because everything attested points and nothing concludes. It honors consent and despises theft. It fixates on the unrepeatable: Rell, the Cavia, the twinned souls of Operator and Drifter. It regards a handshake made on a dying ship as a contract still in force, and as late as the Old Peace it was still in the Operator's ear, speaking as "we," growing louder. Albrecht has gone ahead of it, toward Tau. The record declines to guess what either of them will find there, and keeps the lights on.
